The lengthy journey of Mary and Joseph across the desert wilderness frightens her, but one thing is certain: nothing can sway Mary’s trust in God. She never questions. She ponders, letting the things she doesn’t understand simply be there in her heart, in complete conformity to the divine plan.
When Ismaelita “Smile” Abarquez lost her beloved son, Christian Dave, or CD, because of COVID-19, she faced a harrowing journey through grief. Yet, amid the darkness, she found an unexpected light—a profound acceptance rooted in her unwavering faith.
Smile believes wholeheartedly that her son’s death is not merely a sorrowful end but part of God’s greater plan for their family.
“I accepted it with all my heart because I knew from the start that it would happen to my son. I have a very deep relationship with God. I know that it was God’s plan for me and my family,” said Smile.
CD was a dedicated nursing student whose passion for serving others shone brightly through his countless acts of kindness—whether volunteering during the grueling times of the COVID-19 pandemic or serving God at his local parish.
Rather than allowing grief to consume Smile, she chose to honor his legacy by building “Kuya CD Cares,” a foundation dedicated to helping those in need.
In the face of unimaginable loss, Smile turned her heartbreak into a beacon of hope for others.
This initiative not only serves as a tribute to her son’s unwavering commitment to service but also embodies the love and compassion he shared with the world. Through this foundation, she channels her sorrow into action, providing resources and support for individuals facing their challenges.
Smile reminds us that even in our darkest moments, let us cling to the Lord so we can create light for others.
“Be super close to God. He will give you all you need — wisdom, strength, guidance. For us in the family, we experienced “heaven on earth,” through our son, Christian Dave, an angel in disguise,” said Smile.
In honoring her son’s memory, Smile has turned a loss into love—a testament that even from tragedy can emerge profound change and hope for many.
