Presbyteral council prepares for 2034 synodal journey

Aiming to strengthen their capacity to serve the clergy and the faithful well, members of the Presbyteral Council of the Archdiocese of Cebu gathered at the Filipiniana Hall of the Archbishop’s Residence for a Skills and Competency Development Seminar.

As the Archdiocese embarks on its nine-year synodal journey toward its Centennial Anniversary in 2034, Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy underscored the gathering as a vital step in the long process of preparation.

He emphasized that those present were convened not merely as individuals, but as representatives of the wider presbyterate—called to listen, discern, and journey together in shaping the future of the local Church.

“You sit in this council not to speak only your own thoughts, but to bring the voices and concerns of many, especially those who might not always be heard,” he said.

He added that, as members of the council, they play a crucial role in helping him, as Archbishop, to understand more clearly the real situations of the priests and of the faithful entrusted to their care.

“Your role is essential. Without your honest sharing, your listening, and your discernment, my own understanding would be incomplete. This is what synodality looks like — not walking ahead of one another, but walking with one another,” said Archbishop Abet.

The seminar, he said, is essential so that they may be formed to listen wisely, speak responsibly, and discern beyond personal preference or local concern—recognizing that formation enables them to carry the voices of others with greater clarity, charity, and truth.

“As members of the Presbyteral Council, your counsel shapes decisions that affect priests, parishes, structures, and the credibility of our Church. Formation, therefore, is not an added task; it is part of our pastoral love for the people we serve. My brothers, this seminar is not about correcting others. It is about allowing ourselves to be formed anew for service,” he exhorted.

Let us continue to pray for our priests that they may be guided by wisdom and humility as they listen, discern, and lead the Church with compassion and integrity.
