Santos Gomez Maranon, O.S.A. (1829-1840)

He was born in Valladolid, Spain, on November 1, 1763. He made the religious profession as an Augustinian in 1779 in the seminary at Valladolid where he also taught philosophy. Together with the Archbishop of Manila, Hilarion Diez, he arrived in Manila in 1789 for mission work in the Tagalog region, such as in Hagonoy (1792) and Pasig (1799). He was given the offices of Definitor and Prior Provincial in 1825. However, before he finished his term as Provincial he was designated Bishop of Cebu and consecrated bishop on October 28, 1830 together with Archbishop Jose Segui of Manila in the Church of San Agustin.

On August 13, 1833 the Spanish Monarch awarded Bishop Maranon with the Cross of Isabel the Catholic in recognition of his scholarship not only in the ecclesiastical sciences but also in mathematics and architecture which he applied in the construction of the church and tower of Pateros, Malabon, and in the construction of the churches of Naga and Sibonga (both in Cebu). The bell tower of Argao, Cebu, the Episcopal Palace and the Cathedral tower of Cebu as well as the garden in the convent of Pasig are said to have been planned and designed by Bishop Maranon. He died in Cebu on October 23, 1840.
