As the Universal Church begins a new Liturgical Year on this First Sunday of Advent, the Local Church of Cebu also begins her journey towards the great Centennial of being an Archdiocese.
To mark this occasion, Cebu Archbishop Alberto S. Uy celebrated the Holy Mass with Cebu Auxiliary Bishop-Emeritus Antonio Rañola, Msgr. Rogelio Fuentes (Vicar-General), Msgr. Vicente Rey Peñagunda (Cathedral Team Moderator) with the Cathedral’s Team of Pastors, and other visiting priests.
Drawing from the readings of the day, the Archbishop enjoined the faithful to begin this journey as one family of God.
“Ang Adbiyento mao ang labing tukma nga panahon sa pagsugod ning maong panaw. Ang Adbiyento mao ang paglakaw, pagpaabot, paglaum, ug pagpangandam. Buhaton nato kining tanan karon–dili mag-inusara, kon dili maghiusa. Kini ang synodality. Kini ang atong gilantaw nga mahimong sama ang Artsidyosesis sa Sugbo. Sulod sa siyam ka tuig, mag-uban kita sa pagtungas: ang mga pari uban sa ilang katawhan, ang mga relihiyoso uban sa ilang komunidad, ang mga pamilya uban sa ubang mga pamilya, ang kabatan-onan uban sa mga edaran, ang mga adunahan ug mga kabus, ang siyudad ug kabukiran, ang ka-islahan ug ang mainland… Ang Adbiyento magpukaw nato. Ang sinodohanon nga panaw magpukaw nato. Ang mga panginahanglan sa katawhan–ilabi na sa mga kabus, sa mga survivors sa katalagman, ug sa mga biktima sa korapsyon–kinahanglan makapahigmata usab nato. Tin-aw ang mensahe ni San Pablo: Pagmata! Isalikway ang mga buhat sa kangingit–ang kangitngit sa kawalay-gana, pagkabahinbahin, klerikalismo, korapsyon, tsismis, garbo, ug kawalay aksyon. Dili kita makapanaw isip Simbahan nga buhi kung nahikatulog pa ang atong espiritu. Ang tawag sa Adbiyento mao ang tawag sa atong Sentenaryong Panaw: “Pagkinabuhi ingon og mga anak sa kahayag,” he said.
Before the Mass ended, Msgr. Renato Beltran, Jr. (Archdiocesan Chancellor) read the Decree of the opening of the Archdiocese’s centennial celebrations.
The good archbishop, together with Msgr. Fuentes unveiled the logo marking the start of the nine-year journey. Fr. Junel Fuentes presented the meaning of the centennial logo, while Fr. Benedicto Tao introduced the official theme song of the celebrations entitled “Kita ang Simbahan.” The song, which reflects the Archdiocese’s shared journey as a Church, was played publicly for the first time.
As we begin this journey towards this significant milestone, let us invoke the aid of Almighty God, that He may prosper the work of our hands, and walk with us as we journey to this great centennial.
