Earlier today, the Presbyterium of Cebu gathered at Pope John XXIII Seminary for their Monthly Recollection.

The gathering began with Eucharistic Adoration led by Rev. Mat Labandero, SHF, followed by a spiritual reflection from Fr. Bienvenido “Ned” M. Disu, CM. Centered on the theme, “Listening Shepherds: Praying and Discerning with God’s People,” the recollection invited the clergy to deepen their vocation as pastors who accompany, discern, and walk with the faithful.

In his reflection, Fr. Ned reminded the priests that while they are entrusted with leading parishes and making pastoral decisions, their ministry begins with the humble willingness to listen. Before they can guide the People of God, they must first hear their joys, struggles, hopes, and aspirations with attentive hearts.

The recollection culminated in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Cebu Archbishop Alberto S. Uy.

In his homily, Archbishop Abet urged the priests never to lose sight of whose people they have been called to shepherd. He emphasized that before they are priests, they are first disciples of Christ.

“The deepest relationship with Him is built not on position, but on obedience. Ordination gives us a sacred ministry, but it does not automatically make us holy,” he said.

The Archbishop further stressed that mercy and obedience must always go hand in hand in the life and ministry of every priest.

“If we preach obedience without mercy, people lose hope. If we preach mercy without conversion, people lose direction,” said Archbishop Abet.

Let us continue to pray for the priests of the Archdiocese of Cebu, that they may become ever more closely configured to the Heart of Jesus Christ, faithfully leading His people with wisdom, compassion, and unwavering love.
