The life of Mary invites us to discover the beauty of a heart completely surrendered to God. Her virtues–faith, humility, obedience, purity, patience, perseverance, and compassion–show us what it means to live with God at the center.

Mary’s journey was not without challenges, but she remained faithful through every joy and sorrow. Her trust in God’s providence became a witness of hope for all believers.

Faith

Mary believed in God’s promise even when she could not fully understand His plan. Her “yes” to God opened the way for the Incarnation of Christ.

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. (Lk 1:38)

Humility

Mary recognized that her greatness came not from herself but from God’s grace working through her. She placed herself at the service of the Lord.

“My soul magnifies the Lord… for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.” (Lk 1:46-49)

Obedience to God

Mary surrendered her own plans and accepted God’s will with complete trust, becoming an example of faithful obedience.

“…The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God…” (Lk 1:35-38)

Purity of Heart

Mary’s life was wholly dedicated to God. Her openness to God’s grace allowed her to bear Christ with a heart fully devoted to Him.

“And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”” (Lk 1:28)

Compassion

Mary was attentive to the needs of others and showed concern for their struggles, as seen when she noticed the lack of wine at Cana.

Mary tells Jesus, “They have no wine,” and instructs the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (Jn 2:3-5)

Patience and Perseverance

Mary remained faithful through trials, especially during Jesus’ Passion and death, standing near the Cross with courage.

“Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother…” (Jn 19:25)

Listening to God’s Word

Mary not only heard God’s word but treasured and lived it. She is a model of the disciple who receives God’s message with an open heart.

“…Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” (Lk 11:27-28)

As we traditionally honor her today on her Nativity, may we strive to cultivate her virtues in our own lives. May Mary guide us to a deeper love for God and a more faithful life as followers of Christ.
