AJP opens Holy Week 2025 with Palm Sunday Mass

On this Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of the Holy Week, Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma presides over the Holy Mass at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

In his homily, the good Archbishop emphasized that there are times when we, too, in some ways, were like those people who, at one point, might have sung praises to God, and yet at other times, left Him.

“Usa ka higayon malipayon kita nga nagpasalamat sa kaayo sa Diyos ug nagpangandoy sa grasya ug kaluwasan niya. Pero sa panaw sa kinabuhi, posible niabot ang panahon sa kagubot, kangitngit ug lain-laing eksperinsiya, nibiya kita sa Diyos, nilimod kaniya,” said Archbishop Palma.

He emphasized that the hope of the Holy Week is that, regardless of our current status, God’s love continues.

“Bisan unsa pa man ang mahitabo, bisan unsa pa ang atong buhaton, pinangga kita sa Ginoo,” said Archbishop Palma.

Before the Mass, the blessing of the palms was done.

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ entrance to Jerusalem. Upon His entry, people waved palm branches while crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” (Mark 11:9)

To this day, the Church observes the waving and blessing of palm branches, which signifies Christ’s Messianic Kingship.
