Protasio Cabezas (1741-1752)

Born in Manila he entered the Royal College of San Jose (now San Jose Seminary) to become a priest. He became Parish Priest of Saint John the Baptist, Parian, Cebu City. In 1783 he became Vicar General of Cebu. Having been presented for the episcopacy, he took possession of the Diocese of Cebu on October 16, 1741. Heeding the complaints of the missionaries against the invasion of the Muslims who have increased in great number in the islands, together with the town alcaldes the bishop repeatedly sent his appeal to the Audiencia and to the King who finally issued the “cedule” on June 30, 1744 ordering the defense of the natives against the invaders.
