Cebu Caritas starts weeklong outreach

On this World Day of the Poor, Cebu Caritas Inc., the social action arm of the Archdiocese of Cebu, launched its week-long celebration of the Jubilee of the Poor with the theme: “Accompanying Cebu’s Anawim, pilgrims of hope, in this time of climate and corruption crises.”

Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy presided over the Holy Mass at the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish in N. Escario St., Cebu City. He was joined by Fr. Alex Cola Jr. (President, Cebu Caritas Inc / Chairman, Commission on Service), Fr. Jimmy Tolentin (Vice Chairman, Commission on Service), the parish team of pastors, and other visiting priests.

In his homily, Archbishop Uy reflected on the day’s celebration in light of the Gospel, reminding the faithful not to hold on to earthly possessions, as all material things are temporary. What endures, he emphasized, is not wealth but justice, mercy, righteousness, love for the poor, and generosity of heart.

“Nothing will remain forever. Ang mahabilin ang gugma ug kaluoy sa Ginoo ug ang atong gugma ug kaluoy sa isigkatawo. What matters in the end is how much we have loved,” said Archbishop Abet.

After the Mass, Archbishop Uy led the distribution of Bags of Blessings to more than 200 beneficiaries.

Beginning tomorrow, November 17, until Friday, November 21, Cebu Caritas Inc. will distribute food packs to families affected by Typhoon Tino in various parishes.

On Saturday, November 22, a Closing Mass will be held at Sto. Niño Parish in Nailon, City of Bogo, to be presided over by Fr. Alex Cola Jr. On the same day, a medical mission will be conducted at the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Vicente Ferrer Parish in Bogo.
