Archbishop Uy on New Year’s Eve: Silence and Prayer Open Hearts to God

On the Eve of the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy presided over a Holy Mass at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, offering thanksgiving to God for the graces of the year 2025 and welcoming the coming year with renewed faith and hope.

Together with Archbishop Abet were Cebu Archbishop-Emeritus Jose Palma, the Cathedral’s team of pastors, and visiting priests.

In a world often driven by desires for earthly things, greed, and envy, the good Archbishop emphasized in his homily that the Lord continually offers His grace—not only for the first day of the year, but for every day of our lives.

More often than not, the world is drowned in noise—voices competing to be heard, words overflowing from every direction.

In this reality, Archbishop Abet urged the faithful not to lose sight of what truly matters: the voice of God. Drawing from the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he called on the faithful to pause and reflect, to trust deeply, and to courageously say “yes” to God.

Ug kini mahitabo lamang kon kita makamaong maghilom ug mag-ampo,” he said.
