True fasting transforms heart, Archbishop says in Mactan parish fiesta mass

Today, the Sto. Niño de Cebu Parish in Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, celebrates its annual fiesta.

Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy presided over the Holy Mass. With him were the parish’s team of pastors: Fr. Fernando Sotto Jr. (Team Moderator); Fr. Ireneo Aronales, Fr. Brendan Señoron, and Fr. Domiciano La Rosa (Members), and other visiting priests.

Reflecting on the true meaning of fasting this Lenten Season, the good Archbishop reminded everyone that the kind of fasting the Sto. Niño desires from each of us is far more profound—one that touches the heart and transforms the soul.

More than skipping meals, he urged the community to fast from anger, pride, selfishness, gossip, and indifference. This sacred season, he said, calls for a fasting that purifies not only the body but also one’s character.

“Sigurado ko, ang Diyos nga Bata, gusto nga mopuasa ta sa kalaog, puasa from selfishness. Gusto siya magpuasa ta sa kasuko ug pagdumot. Ug gusto sad siya magpuasa ta sa garbo, kadawo sa gahom. There is value in being humble like the Sñr. Sto. Niño,” said Archbishop Abet.
