On this Eve of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy presides over the Visperas Mass at the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in D. Jakosalem St., Cebu City.
He was joined by Fr. Cesar Marin, SJ (Parish Priest), the Parochial Vicars, and other visiting priests.
In his homily, Archbishop Abet highlighted that devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus calls the faithful to live lives marked by generosity, gratitude, and self-giving love. He emphasized that the Heart of Christ teaches us to recognize that everything we have is ultimately a gift from God.
“A loving heart does not constantly ask, ‘What can I get?’ It also asks, ‘What can I give?’” Archbishop Abet said. “It is good to be grateful because a grateful heart is never empty. It always has something to share. The more generous we become, the more we resemble the Heart of Jesus.”
The Archbishop also reminded the faithful that the Sacred Heart is attentive to those who suffer and invites Christians to develop the same compassion for others.
“The Sacred Heart notices wounded people, and so should we,” he said, urging everyone to be sensitive to those carrying burdens, pains, and struggles that often go unseen.
Concluding his reflection, Archbishop Abet underscored that the Sacred Heart is not merely an object of devotion but a call to mission. He encouraged the faithful to bring Christ’s love beyond church walls and into their daily encounters.
“Love always moves outward,” he said. “Go to your neighborhood, go to those who need help, who need encouragement, who need forgiveness.”
Tomorrow, June 12, Fr. Xavier Olin, SJ (Provincial Superior of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus) will preside over the 10:00 AM Fiesta Mass.
