Today, the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish in Capitol Site, Cebu City, celebrates its 63rd Parish Fiesta.
Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy presided over the Holy Mass. He was joined by Archbishop-Emeritus Osvaldo Padilla (Apostolic Nuncio-emeritus to South Korea and Mongolia), Fr. Isaias Gerali Jr. (Team Moderator), the parish team of pastors, and other visiting priests.
In his homily, Archbishop Abet underscored that a life without God is ultimately empty and devoid of meaning.
Reflecting on today’s solemnity, he explained that living a life with God entails believing in Him, receiving Him, and becoming like Him.
To believe in God, he said, is to recognize Christ’s real presence in the Holy Eucharist. To receive Him is to be continually nourished through Holy Communion and active participation in the Holy Mass. Ultimately, faith and communion with Christ should lead believers to become more like Him in their daily lives.
The Archbishop stressed the urgency of this call amid the frustrations, social challenges, and political divisions of the present time. He reminded the faithful that genuine transformation in society does not rest on a single leader but on the collective witness of individuals striving to live out their faith with integrity, compassion, and responsibility each day.
“Ang problema nato, mangita man tag usa ka kuyaw nga leader kay magtuo man ta nga maluwas ta niya. That will not happen. Only God can save us; and if we also become like Him after receiving Him in the Eucharist,” said Archbishop Abet.
As today is Corpus Christi Sunday, the liturgy used in today’s celebration was proper to the Sunday. This is because the Solemnities of the Liturgical Year take precedence over Proper Solemnities (i.e. Parish Fiestas).
