Cebu Cathedral celebrates feast of St. Vitalis

Today, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral celebrates the Feast of its Patron and Titular, St. Vitalis of Milan.

Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” S. Uy presided over the 4:00 PM Fiesta Mass, joined by Msgr. Rogelio Fuentes, PC (Vicar General), Msgr. Vicente Rey Peñagunda (Vicar General and Cathedral Team Moderator), the Cathedral’s team of pastors, and visiting priests.

As Cebu also commemorates the 92nd anniversary of its elevation as an Archdiocese, Archbishop Abet reflected in his homily on the journey of faith—one often marked by challenges. He reminded the faithful to stand firm, trusting that the Good Shepherd will never abandon them.

He further emphasized that the mission of the Archdiocese is not only to build churches, but to become living witnesses who lead others to God—a Church that brings people closer to Christ through goodness, listens to the voice of the Good Shepherd, and remains faithful even in sacrifice.

Drawing from the life of St. Vitalis of Milan, the good Archbishop invited the faithful not only to look back with gratitude, but also to look within and move forward with renewed hearts.

“Aside from being a nobleman, there was nothing extraordinary about him. But he gave everything, even his life, for God. In the end, what matters is not success, but faithfulness,” he said.
