“Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.”
Behind these words is the beautiful story of a man who once wandered far from God but eventually found his way home. Let us get to know St. Augustine of Hippo and witness his extraordinary conversion.
Aurelius Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste, Algeria, to Patricius, a non-believer, and Monica, a devout Catholic who would later become St. Monica. From an early age, Augustine possessed a brilliant and inquisitive mind. He pursued education, success, wealth, and fame, eventually becoming a teacher of rhetoric in Rome and Milan.
Yet behind his accomplishments was a restless heart. Augustine lived a worldly life and spent years searching for answers through different philosophies and beliefs. For nine years, he followed the Manichaean sect, only to discover that it could not satisfy his deepest questions.
While teaching in Milan, Augustine began listening to the preaching of St. Ambrose. At first, he was drawn simply by Ambrose’s eloquence, but eventually, the bishop’s preaching opened his heart to the Christian faith.
Then came the moment that changed his life.
In 386, while in Milan, Augustine heard what seemed to be the voice of a child saying, “Take it and read it.” He opened the Scriptures and read from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans: “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.” (Romans 13:14)
Those words pierced his heart. Augustine finally surrendered his old life to God. On April 24, 387, during the Easter Vigil, he was baptized by St. Ambrose, together with his friend Alypius and his son, Adeodatus.
His past did not prevent him from becoming a saint. Instead, God’s grace transformed his past into a testimony of conversion.
Augustine later became one of the greatest theologians and spiritual writers of the Church. He died on August 28, 430, and is honored today as a Doctor of the Church and the Doctor of Grace.
Looking back on his journey, Augustine wrote:
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
The life of St. Augustine reminds us that conversion is never impossible. We may wander, fall, and search in the wrong places, but God’s grace never stops calling us home.
May our hearts remain restless—not because we are lost, but because we are always seeking the One for whom we were made.
