Tuyan marks Sakay-sakay Marian tradition

The faithful of Tuyan in the City of Naga, Cebu marked the annual Sakay-Sakay celebration on the third Sunday of December, honoring Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario de Tuyan through a series of land and fluvial processions.

The tradition recalls an agreement between the faithful of Tuyan and the Naga parish, where the image of the Blessed Mother was originally enshrined. Under the agreement, the image became the patroness of Tuyan, on the condition that she be brought to Naga parish before the start of her novena.

The celebration began after the Sixth Day of the Misa de Gallo with the descent of the image from her shrine, followed by a procession to the Suba port, where devotees waved leaves as a sign of reverence.

From there, the fluvial procession, known locally as Sakay-Sakay, brought the image to North Poblacion port. The image was then carried in a foot procession to the Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi in City of Naga.

This year marked the first time that the image of St. Francis of Assisi, patron of Naga City, joined the procession of the Blessed Mother around the city.

After her visit to Naga parish, the image returned to Tuyan through another fluvial and foot procession, concluding with the traditional Sinug Atras.

Tuyan Parish will celebrate its 39th Parochial Fiesta on December 30, 2025.
