With a Father’s Heart

As we honor all our earthly fathers, let us draw from the example of the Father par excellence – looking into his life – emulating the example he has set for all fathers, when he chose to take the Son of God as his own.

Courage

Just as St. Joseph led the way to Egypt and back, as Christian Fathers, we are called to lead our families towards greater and brighter futures.

When things seem uncertain, we are called to take courage, knowing that when we work like Saint Joseph, all will align with the will of God.

Humble acceptance

In scripture, there is not a single word recorded coming out of Saint Joseph’s Mouth. Although many may interpret this as mere silence, this action speaks of a far deeper reality: Humble Acceptance.

Even when Saint Joseph had every right to speak out, he chose to keep silent. Even when his voice could have changed the course of history, he chose not to utter a word. As Christian Fathers, we are called to emulate this noble characteristic. This does not mean to condone mischief in the family. Rather, it is a call to listen deeply, to understand more, and to love with no limit.

Obedience and trust

Typically, Fathers are figures of authority who command obedience and trust. Although Saint Joseph was the Protector of the Holy Family, he did not need to demand obedience and trust from Mary and Jesus. He attained it by setting an example.

Just as he was obedient to the Will of God by taking Mary into his home, as Christian Fathers, we must submit in obedience and trust to the Will of God. It is in our submission to God that we become true figures of authority in our own families.

As St. Joseph radiated the love of God the Father towards the Holy Family, so also are we, Christian Fathers, called to follow in his footsteps – to love with a Father’s heart – to love with the Heart of God.
