“The Gospel for today is one of the most moving stories in the Bible. It is about a mother who came to Jesus because her daughter was suffering terribly. Every parent can understand her pain. Nothing hurts more than seeing your child sick, lost, addicted, far from God, or making one wrong decision after another.

From this mother’s encounter with Jesus, I would like to share three simple lessons for every parent.

Never stop praying for your children

The Canaanite woman cried out to Jesus, but at first, He seemed silent. Have you ever felt that way? You have prayed for years, yet nothing seems to change. Sometimes even other people tell you, “Give up. Your child will never change.”

But this mother refused to give up. She kept praying because love never gives up.

Perhaps some of you have children who no longer come to church, no longer listen to you, or no longer even speak to you. This Gospel tells you: Keep praying. God hears every tear of a parent.

Bring your children to Jesus

The woman knew she could not heal her daughter by herself. She brought her to Jesus.

Parents today work hard to give their children a good education, a comfortable home, and a secure future. Those are wonderful gifts. But the greatest gift you can give your children is Jesus.

Teach them to pray. Bring them to Mass. Let them see you forgive, trust God, and remain faithful during difficult times. Children may forget many of our words, but they rarely forget the example of believing parents.

Keep hoping, even when you see no results

At the end of the Gospel, Jesus said, “Woman, great is your faith!”

Notice that Jesus praised her faith before she saw the miracle. That is real faith—believing while still waiting.

Many parents become discouraged because they do not see immediate change. But God often works quietly. Seeds grow beneath the soil long before they appear above the ground.

Remember St. Monica. She prayed for her son Augustine for many years before he finally returned to God. Her tears became the beginning of a saint.

The Power of a Mother’s Love

Let me end with a simple story.

A teacher noticed that one of her students was always troublesome. He failed his lessons, disturbed the class, and often got into fights. Many had already labeled him a hopeless child.

But every afternoon, the boy’s mother would quietly wait outside the school gate. She never failed to greet him with a smile, hug him, and tell him, “I know you can become a good man. I’m praying for you every day.”

Years later, that boy graduated, found a good job, and visited his old teacher. The teacher asked him, “What changed your life?”

He replied, “Many people had given up on me. But my mother never did. I wanted to become the son she believed I could be.”

Final Words

My dear parents, if you have a difficult child, do not lose heart. Your prayers are never wasted. Your love is never in vain. The God who healed the daughter of the Canaanite woman can also heal your son, your daughter, and your family.

Keep praying. Keep loving. Keep hoping. For with God, no child is beyond His mercy, and no family is beyond His power to heal.”
