St. Pio of Pietrelcina is certainly no stranger to us. For many, he is a beloved intercessor to whom thousands turn in times of deep need.
However, there is one incredible event from his life that many of us may not have heard about before.
During World War II, the region of Apulia in southern Italy was a frequent target of tactical bombing raids.
Yet, time and again, Allied pilots reported seeing a mysterious brown-robed figure appearing in the sky. A figure they soon dubbed the “Flying Friar.”
Pilots claimed that as they approached their target near San Giovanni Rotondo, their instrument panels malfunctioned, bomb bay doors opened unexpectedly, and their aircraft were mysteriously turned around or forced to drop payloads harmlessly into uninhabited fields.
Stationed at the airbase was General Nathan F. Twining. Upon hearing these bizarre reports, he dismissed them as fatigue and combat stress.
Determined to uncover the truth, he decided to lead a bombing squadron himself to strike the target.
He simply could not bring himself to believe that a monk was flying through the clouds, or that bomb bay doors were jammed by a heavenly force. He took off with his squadron for San Giovanni Rotondo to carry out the mission.
However, as they neared the monastery, General Twining was stunned: a brown-robed friar appeared in the clouds right in front of his lead bomber, flying exactly the same speed as the aircraft.
With his hands extended, the monk signaled them to turn back. Instantly, the bomb bay doors opened on their own, the payloads fell harmlessly into open woods below, and the bombers turned around by themselves.
Shaken, the General aborted the raid and filed his own astonishing official report upon returning to Bari.
After the war, General Twining visited the monastery at San Giovanni Rotondo.
As he walked up the steps, he found himself standing face-to-face with Padre Pio, who greeted him with a gentle smile and a humorous quip: “So you are the one who wanted to destroy everything!”
The encounter touched the General deeply, and he eventually became a close friend of the saint.
Whether viewed as an extraordinary historical account or a mystery, what matters most is the heart behind it.
Padre Pio’s life reassures us that God’s protective power operates beyond the limits of human understanding.
When life is overwhelmed by conflict and uncertainty, we are reminded that Heaven actively watches over us and works quietly to shield us from harm.
