Ask a young person today, “Do you believe in angels?”
Some will immediately say, “Yes!”
But others may ask: “Where is the proof? Have you ever seen one? Can science prove that angels exist?”
Those are good questions. We should not be afraid of them.
Our young people are growing up in a world of science, technology, artificial intelligence, and social media. They are used to seeing evidence on a screen. If they cannot see something, sometimes they find it difficult to believe.
So how do we explain Guardian Angels to them?
Perhaps we begin with something simple: Not everything that is real can be seen.
You cannot see love—but you know when you are loved.
You cannot see friendship—but you know when a true friend stands beside you.
You cannot see God—but we experience His goodness in our lives.
Reality is greater than what our eyes can see. And Scripture tells us that God’s creation includes a spiritual world.
In Exodus, God says: “I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way.”
Psalm 91 says: “He commands his angels… to guard you wherever you go.”
And Jesus Himself says in today’s Gospel: “Their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”
So Guardian Angels are not simply cute figures with wings that we show to children. They remind us of something very important: every human person is precious in the eyes of God.
And perhaps this is the best way to teach Guardian Angels to the new generation—not only by explaining angels, but by allowing them to experience God’s protecting love through us.
God sent an angel
I once heard of a little girl who became separated from her mother in a crowded place. She was crying when an elderly woman noticed her, stayed beside her, calmed her down, and helped find her mother.
When they were reunited, the mother embraced her tightly.
Later the little girl said, “Mama, I think God knew I was lost, so He sent an angel to stay with me.”
Final Words
What a beautiful faith.
Our children may not always understand long explanations about angels. But they can understand this:
There is a God who knows when you are lost.
There is a God who cares when you are afraid.
There is a God who watches over you.
And sometimes, God asks us to become instruments of His protecting love for others.
Teach them about Guardian Angels. But even more importantly, help them experience the God whose loving care the angels serve.
