Be holy from within

“There is something surprising in today’s Gospel.

Jesus is invited to dine at the home of a Pharisee. Before the meal begins, Jesus sits down without first performing the customary ritual washing. The Pharisee notices this and is surprised.

This washing was not simply about hygiene. It was a religious practice that expressed concern for ritual purity. The Pharisee believed that a person should be careful to remain clean according to the religious customs of the time.

But Jesus uses this moment to teach a deeper lesson: “You Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil.”

Jesus is not condemning religious practice itself. He is warning against a faith that looks good on the outside but has not changed the heart.

A person may appear religious, follow many customs, and be respected by others, while still carrying anger, greed, pride, or selfishness within.

This is why God told Samuel, “Man sees the appearance, but the Lord looks into the heart.” And through the prophet Ezekiel, God promised, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.”

So the real question is not simply, “Are my hands clean?” but “Is my heart clean?”

We can attend Mass and still carry hatred. We can pray the Rosary and refuse to forgive. We can serve in the Church and still seek recognition. We can know many prayers and yet fail to notice the person in need beside us.

——

A wealthy man regularly donated large sums of money to charity. Everyone admired his generosity.

One day, however, he saw an elderly woman struggling to carry her groceries. Instead of simply giving her money, he stopped and carried the bags to her home. He also took time to listen to her story.

Later, he said, “That was the first time I realized that charity is not only giving from my pocket; it is giving my heart.”

——

That is why Jesus says, “Give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” Jesus is teaching that a heart touched by God becomes a heart that gives—not only money, but also time, attention, forgiveness, and love.

The wealthy man had already been giving money. But when he stopped to help that woman personally, his generosity became more than an outward action. It became an expression of love. His heart was beginning to change.

Jesus is not asking us merely to look holy. He wants to make us holy from within.”
