We prepare because someone who loves us is waiting for us

Jesus gives us one simple message today: Live ready to meet the Lord.

He says, “Gird your loins and light your lamps.” Be like servants waiting for their master to return.

We prepare for so many things in life. We prepare for examinations, meetings, celebrations, vacations, even retirement.

But there is one appointment for which we sometimes forget to prepare: our meeting with the Lord.

And none of us knows when that meeting will come.

But Jesus is not asking us to live frightened of death. He is asking us to live well today.

To be ready means that if the Lord comes today, He finds us loving, forgiving, serving, praying, and trying to do what is right.

We do not have to be perfect. We simply have to be faithful.

Perhaps every morning we can ask: “Lord, if You come today, how would You want to find me?”

Because sometimes we postpone what really matters.

“Someday I will forgive.”
“Someday I will change.”
“Someday I will spend more time with my family.”
“Someday I will return to God.”

But we do not know how many “somethings” are left.

So forgive today. Love today. Serve today. Pray today. Come back to God today.

He always comes home

There is a story of an elderly man who faithfully waited every afternoon by the window for his son to come home from work. One day somebody asked him, “Why do you always sit there waiting? Your son comes home every day.”

The old man smiled and said, “Precisely. I wait because I know he is coming.”

Final Words

That is Christian vigilance. We wait because we know Someone is coming.

And here is the most beautiful part of today’s Gospel. Verse 37 says that when the master finally arrives and finds his servants awake, the master himself will have them sit at table, and he will serve them.

What a surprising God we have!

The servants wait to serve the master. But in the end, the Master serves the servants.

This is Jesus—the Lord who washed His disciples’ feet, gave His life for us, and prepares a place for us.

So we do not prepare for death simply because we are afraid. We prepare because Someone who loves us is waiting for us.

Keep your lamp burning. Live ready. And when the Lord finally knocks, may we open the door and say: “Lord, I have been waiting for You.”

And perhaps the Lord will smile and say: “Come. Sit with Me. You have served long enough. Now let Me serve you.”
