“In the Gospel today, Jesus sends out the seventy-two disciples. Not the Twelve. Not the famous ones. Just ordinary followers.
And He sends them with very simple instructions: Bring peace. Stay where you are welcomed. Heal. Proclaim that the Kingdom of God is near.
This Gospel fits very beautifully the lives of Saints Timothy and Titus. They were not the stars of the early Church. They were not the founders. They were simply men who were sent.
And from them, we learn three simple lessons.
1. Mission begins with peace, not preaching
Jesus says, “When you enter a house, say: Peace to this household.”
Notice: He did not say, “Start preaching immediately.” He said, bring peace first.
Timothy and Titus were sent to communities that were confused, divided, and struggling. Imagine entering a parish or community full of issues. What do you bring first? Arguments? Authority? Correction?
No. They brought the peace of Christ. Because people listen to the Gospel only after they feel the presence of peace.
Sometimes in our own homes, we bring tension instead of peace. In our workplaces, we bring pressure instead of calm. The mission begins when people feel lighter because we arrived.
That is Christian mission.
2. Mission is about presence, not prestige
Jesus tells them: Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals.
In other words: Do not rely on what you have. Rely on who you carry.
Timothy was young. Titus had no great status. They had no prestige. But they carried Christ in their hearts. And that was enough.
We sometimes think we need to be important to serve God. We think, “I am just an ordinary person.” Exactly. That is who Jesus sends.
You do not need a title to be a missionary. You just need a heart that carries Christ wherever you go.
3. Mission requires staying, not escaping
Jesus says something very beautiful: “Do not move from house to house.”
Stay. Be faithful. Persevere.
Timothy and Titus stayed with difficult people. They did not run away when things became messy. They remained. They accompanied. They patiently built the Church.
Many of our problems today come because people give up too quickly—on relationships, on service, on communities.
But the Kingdom of God grows where people choose to stay.
Stay in your family. Stay in your vocation. Stay with difficult people. Stay with love.
Final Words
Saints Timothy and Titus remind us: you do not have to be famous to be a missionary. You only need to: Bring peace. Carry Christ. And stay faithful.
And wherever you do that, the words of Jesus become true: “The Kingdom of God is at hand.”
