In commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, and as a collective ecclesial act of remembrance, prayer, and moral witness, I hereby direct the following:
1. Today, Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at exactly 3:00 PM, all parish churches in the Archdiocese of Cebu shall conduct a simultaneous tolling of church bells.
2. The tolling of the bells shall last for forty (40) seconds, symbolizing:
- forty years since the EDSA People Power Revolution; and
- forty years of our continuing journey toward genuine freedom.
3. The faithful are to be encouraged to pause briefly in prayer as the bells ring, offering intentions for:
- our nation and its leaders
- integrity in public service
- • unity among our people
- • the healing of our wounded democracy
- • the eradication of graft and corruption and
- • an end to political dynasties.
Church bells have long served as the public voice of the Church—calling people to prayer and reminding society of its moral conscience. Through this simultaneous tolling, we join the entire nation in remembering the spirit of EDSA—peaceful, prayerful, and united—while affirming that the work of safeguarding freedom and democracy remains unfinished.
May this simple but meaningful act awaken conscience, renew hope, and strengthen our commitment as a people and as a Church.
