Archbishop Uy urges hope, unity on Palm Sunday

Today, the Church commemorates Palm Sunday, which recalls Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (Mt 21:1-11).

Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” S. Uy presided over the Palm Sunday Mass at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. He was joined by Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Jose Palma, the Cathedral’s team of pastors, and other visiting priests.

In his homily, Archbishop Abet reminded the faithful that Palm Sunday is not only a celebration but also an invitation to journey with Jesus to His death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.

The good Archbishop emphasized that the circumstances in Jesus’ time mirror our own—a world marked by tension, fear, and hidden struggles. Christ came to be with His people in the midst of their weariness, anxiety, and uncertainty.

Even amid these hardships, he reassured the faithful that they are not alone, encouraging them to walk together, clinging to prayer and hope, as they face life’s challenges.

“Sa mga naglisod karon, wala kamo nag-inusara sa inyong kalisdanan. Aduna kamo’y kauban sa inyong kahimtang. Panahon nga kita maghinawiray sa usag-usa. Ug labaw sa tanan, sayri ninyo nga si Jesus nga atong Diyos, makighiusa ninyo. Dili Siya mopahilayo ug dili ta Niya pasagdan sa atong kalisdanan,” he said.

Before the Mass, the blessing of the palms was done at the grotto of the Cathedral.
