To have a heart like our Blessed Mother

“Today, the Church invites us to honor the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Gospel recounts the familiar story of the 12-year-old Jesus remaining in the Temple while Mary and Joseph searched anxiously for Him.

When they finally found Him, Mary said, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” Jesus replied, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” Yet the Gospel tells us that Mary did not fully understand what Jesus meant. Then comes a very beautiful line: “His mother kept all these things in her heart.”

This verse reveals the meaning of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Mary did not understand everything that happened in her life. She experienced confusion, uncertainty, and even sorrow. Yet instead of complaining or losing faith, she brought everything into her heart and entrusted it to God. She reflected, prayed, and waited patiently for God’s plan to unfold.

This memorial challenges us in three ways.

First, treasure God’s word in your heart.

We live in a noisy world filled with social media, endless opinions, and constant distractions. Many people listen to everything except God. Mary teaches us to make space for prayer, silence, and reflection. A Christian who does not listen to God will eventually lose direction.

Second, trust God even when you do not understand.

Many of us carry questions: Why this illness? Why this loss? Why this disappointment? Mary herself did not always understand God’s ways. Yet she continued to trust. Faith is not having all the answers. Faith is believing that God remains faithful even when life seems unclear.

Third, keep a loving and compassionate heart.

The heart of Mary was pure because it was filled with love for God and for others. In a world marked by anger, division, and selfishness, Christians are called to have hearts that forgive, understand, and care. A true disciple is recognized not only by correct beliefs but by a heart that loves.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary reminds us that holiness begins in the heart. Before Mary spoke, she listened. Before she acted, she pondered. Before she followed, she trusted.

Today let us ask Our Blessed Mother to help us have a heart like hers, a heart that listens to God, trusts Him in every circumstance, and loves generously.

May the Immaculate Heart of Mary lead us always to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Amen.”
