“The first words of today’s reading are shocking. The prophet Isaiah tells King Hezekiah: “Set your house in order, for you are about to die.”
Imagine hearing those words from your doctor today. How would you react?
Most of us would probably say, “I’m not yet ready.”
The truth is, we spend so much time preparing for life that we often forget to prepare for eternity.
Notice what Hezekiah does. He does not become angry with God. He does not blame others. Instead, he turns to the Lord and prays with all his heart. He cries. He entrusts everything to God. And God hears his prayer and grants him more years to live.
This story reminds us of three simple but important lessons.
First, life is fragile.
No one knows how much time we have. We make plans for next year, for retirement, for our children, for our careers. There is nothing wrong with that. But sometimes we live as though we will stay here forever.
Every new day is not something we deserve. It is a gift. That is why we should not postpone what is truly important.
If you need to ask forgiveness, do it now. If you need to forgive someone, do it now. If you have neglected your family, begin today. If you have drifted away from God, come back while there is still time.
Second, prayer changes us because it brings us closer to God.
God heard Hezekiah’s prayer. Does that mean God always gives exactly what we ask? Not necessarily. Sometimes God changes our situation. Sometimes He changes our heart so that we can face our situation with faith.
But sincere prayer is never wasted. When everything else fails, prayer remains our greatest strength.
Third, every additional day God gives us is a mission.
Hezekiah was not given fifteen more years simply to enjoy life. Those years were another opportunity to love God and serve His people.
The same is true for us. If you woke up this morning, it means God still has a purpose for you. Do not waste today’s grace on resentment, selfishness, endless complaints, or meaningless distractions. Live today in a way that you will never regret tomorrow.
A new life
A man once survived a serious heart attack. After recovering, he said something very simple: “I thought I was being given back my old life. Then I realized I was being given a new one.”
That changed everything. He spent more time with his family. He reconciled with his brother after years of silence. He became more generous. He prayed every day.
He discovered that the greatest miracle was not simply living longer. The greatest miracle was living better.
Final Words
Brothers and sisters, we may not know how many years remain for us. But we do know that today is in God’s hands.
So let us put our lives in order. Let us return to the Lord with sincere hearts. And let us live each day as a grateful gift, ready whenever God calls us home, and faithful for as long as He asks us to remain.”
