How does belief in the resurrection help us live this life well?

“The Sadducees approach Jesus with a question about the resurrection. They do not really want to learn; they want to discredit the idea of life after death. Jesus responds firmly: “He is not God of the dead but of the living.”

At the heart of this Gospel is a simple but powerful truth: our life does not end at death. We are destined for eternal life with God.

But how does belief in the resurrection help us live this life well?

First, belief in the resurrection gives meaning to our sacrifices. Many people today ask: “Why should I remain honest when dishonesty seems to prosper? Why should I continue doing good when it is difficult?” The resurrection reminds us that our story does not end in this world. Every act of love, sacrifice, and faithfulness has eternal value in God’s eyes.

Second, belief in the resurrection helps us keep our priorities straight. If this life is all there is, then wealth, power, status, and pleasure become everything. But if eternal life awaits us, then we realize that what matters most is not what we possess but who we become. We begin to invest more in virtue than in popularity, more in relationships than in possessions, and more in serving than in accumulating.

Third, belief in the resurrection gives us hope in times of suffering. We all experience loss, sickness, disappointment, and grief. The resurrection assures us that suffering does not have the final word. Death itself does not have the final word. Christ has conquered death, and those who belong to Him are called to share in His victory.

This message is especially important today. Our society often focuses only on the immediate and the material. We become anxious about success, power, and possessions. But the resurrection reminds us that we are pilgrims, not permanent residents of this world. We are journeying toward a greater destiny.

When we truly believe in the resurrection, we become freer to love, quicker to forgive, more willing to sacrifice, and more courageous in doing what is right. We live not merely for today, but for eternity.

There is a beautiful proverb that says: “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world will cry and you will rejoice.”

May our belief in the resurrection inspire us to live each day with faith, hope, and love, so that when our earthly journey ends, we may rejoice in the fullness of life that God has prepared for His faithful servants.
