Today, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santiago de Compostela in Compostela, Cebu, marks the third day of its Novena with the theme, “Santiago Apostol: Giya sa Pagpaminaw Alang sa Kahiusahan sa Simbahan.”

The Holy Mass was presided over by Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy, together with the Fr. Crescenciano Ubod (Parish Priest), Fr. Bense Mante (Parochial Vicar), and other visiting priests.

In his homily, Archbishop Abet called on the faithful to embrace the Church’s synodal journey by becoming a listening people—one who listens not only with the ears but with the heart.

“Sa atong pagtinguha nga mahimong usa ka Simbahan, atong gamiton dili lang ang atong dalunggan, kundili ang atong kinatibuk-an, labi na gyud ang atong kasingkasing,” he said.

Reflecting on the life of St. James the Apostle, the Archbishop underscored that genuine discipleship begins with listening to Christ. He reminded the congregation that St. James became a faithful witness because he first learned to hear and follow the voice of the Lord.

“Ang nakanindot ni Santiago, nakat-on siya nga maminaw sa Ginoo. Kay nakadungog man siya ni Kristo… nga ang labing dako diay ang mangalagad. Dili importante ang posisyon, kundili ang imong kagustuhan nga mangalagad sa tanan,” said Archbishop Abet.

His message echoed the heart of the Synod: a Church that listens with humility, serves with love, and walks together in communion.

The Archdiocesan Shrine of Santiago de Compostela will celebrate its 163rd Annual Fiesta Celebration on July 25, 2026. The 4:00 PM Fiesta Pontifical Mass will be presided over by Cebu Archbishop-Emeritus Jose S. Palma
