Sambag parish celebrates golden fiesta

Today, the San Vicente Ferrer Parish in Sambag 1 & 2, Cebu City, celebrates its 50th Annual Parish Fiesta and Canonical Erection Anniversary with the theme: “Dilaab sa Gugma sa Diyos, Iway Padulong sa Diyos.”

Cebu Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy presided over the Holy Mass. He was joined by Fr. Mark Zarate, OFM (Parish Priest), the Franciscan community, and other visiting priests.

Despite our unworthiness, Archbishop Abet reminded the faithful in his homily that all are called to proclaim the Good News of God’s love to the world.

Drawing inspiration from Saint Vincent Ferrer, he emphasized that for priests, preaching remains a central and sacred duty—one that must never be taken lightly. Rather, it demands diligent preparation, prayer, and deep reflection.

“Tungod kay dako nga butang, seryoso nga papel sa pari, kinahanglan hagoan, ampoan, pamalandongan ang pulong nga isangyaw sa katawhan. Maayo unta ang mga gahi’g kasingkasing, mahumok, tungod sa atoang pagsangyaw sa gugma sa Diyos,” the Archbishop said.

He further underscored that the mission to evangelize is not limited to the clergy, but entrusted to every Christian. As the Church also celebrates today the feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist, the Archbishop pointed to his example—one who, though not among the Twelve Apostles, encountered the Good News and went on to proclaim the Gospel with zeal.

“Dili kinahanglan og titulo. Dili nato kinahanglan ang privileged position in the community in order to preach. We can be one of the ordinary but still we are given the privilege to share the Good News,” he said.

He concluded by urging the faithful to become living witnesses of the Gospel and proclaim God’s love not only through words, but through a life of action, service, and authentic Christian witness.
