What makes a good prayer?

“Jesus teaches us the Our Father, perhaps the most familiar prayer in the Christian world. Many of us learned it as children. We pray it at Mass, during the Rosary, and at family gatherings. The danger, however, is that because we know it so well, we may recite it without really reflecting on what it teaches us about prayer.

If the Lord’s Prayer is the model prayer, then what are the essential elements of a good prayer?

A good prayer begins with relationship

Jesus teaches us to begin with these words: “Our Father.”

Notice that Jesus did not tell us to say, “Our Boss,” “Our Judge,” or “Our Ruler.” He said, “Our Father.”

Prayer is not primarily about asking for things. It is first about entering into a relationship with God.

Many people pray only when they need something: when they are sick, in trouble, or facing a crisis. There is nothing wrong with that. But imagine a child who talks to his father only when he needs money. That would not be a healthy relationship.

A good prayer begins by simply being with God and remembering that we are His beloved children.

A good prayer seeks God’s will before our own

After calling God “Father,” Jesus teaches us to pray: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done.”

Most of us pray this way: “Lord, here is my plan. Please bless it.” But Jesus teaches us another way: “Lord, what is Your plan? Help me follow it.”

Prayer is not about convincing God to do our will. Prayer is about allowing God to shape our hearts to do His will. One of the signs of spiritual maturity is when we stop asking, “Lord, why are You not following my plans?” and start asking, “Lord, what are You trying to teach me through this?”

A good prayer includes trust and forgiveness

Jesus tells us to pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Notice He says daily bread, not a year’s supply. God invites us to trust Him one day at a time.

And then comes perhaps the most challenging part: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

We cannot ask God for mercy while refusing to show mercy to others.

Prayer is not only about opening our hands to receive God’s blessings. It is also about opening our hearts to let go of anger, resentment, and grudges.

That is why Jesus immediately talks about forgiveness after teaching the Our Father. He knows that an unforgiving heart can become a barrier to God’s grace.

Final Words

So what makes a good prayer?

A good prayer has relationship: “Our Father.”

A good prayer has surrender: “Thy will be done.”

A good prayer has trust: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

And a good prayer has forgiveness: “Forgive us as we forgive.”

Prayer is not measured by its length or by the beauty of its words. The best prayer is the one that draws us closer to God and slowly transforms us into people who think, love, trust, and forgive like Him. And that is exactly what the Lord’s Prayer was meant to do.”
