“If I were to ask young people today, “Who are your influencers?” many names would probably come to mind—athletes, singers, vloggers, gamers, or social media personalities. They have millions of followers.

But today, the Church presents to us another influencer: Saint John Mary Vianney. He had no social media, no YouTube channel, no expensive equipment. He spent most of his life in a small village called Ars. Yet more than 160 years after his death, millions of people throughout the world still look up to him. Why? Because he did not simply attract followers. He led people to Jesus.

Today’s Gospel helps us understand why.

Jesus criticizes the Pharisees because they were concerned more about external practices than the conversion of the heart. They were busy with appearances but neglected what truly matters. Jesus reminds us that it is not external rituals that make a person holy, but an interior life rooted in God. Saint John Vianney lived exactly that.

I would like to share three inspirations for our young people:

Build your character before your image

Today, many young people spend a great deal of time building an online image. We carefully choose our profile pictures, edit our photos, count our followers, and worry about what others think of us.

But Jesus reminds us that what matters most is not what people see on the outside but what God sees in the heart.

Saint John Vianney was never known for his appearance or brilliance. In fact, he struggled in his studies and almost failed to become a priest. Yet he possessed something greater: a humble, prayerful, and sincere heart.

Young people, never be discouraged if you are not the smartest, the richest, or the most popular. God can do extraordinary things with an ordinary person who has an extraordinary love for Him.

Stay close to God in a world full of noise

Our generation has never been more connected, yet many feel lonely. We have countless notifications but very little silence.

Saint John Vianney teaches us the importance of prayer. Before speaking to people, he spent long hours speaking with God. That was the secret of his wisdom.

Young people, if you want to know your purpose in life, do not listen only to the loudest voices around you. Learn to listen to the quiet voice of God.

The world gives information. God gives direction.

Become a light, not just another influence

Jesus warns the people not to follow blind guides.

Today there are many voices trying to influence young people. Some lead them toward selfishness, pleasure, dishonesty, or hopelessness.

Saint John Vianney reminds us that every Christian is called not merely to follow trends but to become a light for others.

Your friends do not need another celebrity. They need someone who is honest. Someone who forgives. Someone who prays. Someone whose life points to Christ. The world already has enough influencers. The Church needs witnesses.

More Than Success

Let me end with a story.

A teacher once asked her students, “What do you want to become when you grow up?”

One answered, “A doctor.”

Another said, “An engineer.”

Another said, “A successful businessman.”

Then one quiet boy stood up and said, “I want to become someone who makes people closer to God.”

The classroom became silent.

Perhaps that young man never became famous. But if he helped even one person find Christ, his life was already a great success.

That was the life of Saint John Mary Vianney. He did not become famous because he sought popularity. He became holy because he sought God.

May Saint John Mary Vianney inspire each one of us not merely to succeed in life, but to become men and women after the heart of Christ.”
